Jean Nelson

Jean was born in Scotland and grew up in Brechin, Angus. As a teenager she was very involved in music in her area being involved in local choirs, becoming a church organist at the age of 16 and playing viola in the National Youth String Orchestra of Scotland. A keen chamber musician she regularly played in quartets and ensembles and also won the Nora C. Leggatt prize for Piano Grade Six.

Following on from school she went on to Glasgow University and while there was also a part-time student at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now Royal Scottish Conservatoire) where she studied viola with Jimmy Durrant and piano with Angela Dale.

After graduating with an M.A. Hons Jean lived for many years in Holland and while there she did post graduate studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam studying singing and piano.

Professionally, Jean sang with The Dutch Radio Choir working under condutors such as Bernard Haitink and Riccardo Chailly. She also continued her chamber music particularly as a piano accompanist and for over 20 years taught music privately.

Upon returning to Scotland a number of years ago she has continued her teaching and performing practice in Dumfries. She enjoys teaching people of different ages and is keen to see everyone develop their individual talents. Now extending her teaching reach to Ayr (currently Saturdays only) she is available for lessons in piano, violin/viola, singing, celtic harp and music theory including sight singing. She has a patient and friendly style structuring lessons so that students may learn at their own pace. She is also available as a piano accompanist for those requiring such services.
